A: Your original surface likely had "hidden geometry" (softened but not smoothed). Go to View > Hidden Geometry and check for stray vertices.
SketchUp's native Push/Pull tool is excellent for basic 3D modeling, but it has a major limitation: it only works on flat, individual faces along a single perpendicular axis. If you try to extrude a curved surface, a sphere, or multiple faces simultaneously in different directions, the native tool fails.
